What is a Bluehoo?

There are, apparently, 100,000s of Bluehoo’s all over the web according to
http://www.bluehoo.com/
.

**I know what a BlueHoo is..kind of!**

“Bluehoo is a mobile app that helps you make new social connections with the people around you – for business or for pleasure. Bluehoo uses Bluetooth to discover “hoos” around you right here, right now, shows you those people’s profiles and helps you start conversations”

Now this could be pretty cool. A way of finding other tech enthusiasts/Microsoft fans/MS staff etc while you’re out and about could, used properly lead to some good stuff. However what happens if all and sundry start using BlueHoo? Will it then become as ubiquitous and dare I say it, pointless as MySpace, FaceBook etc? I hope not becuase they’re done a great job at generating a buzz around this so here’s to a successfull future Hoobert!

You can download the beta software here.

I downloaded the Software last night and installed it on my HTC Diamond, no issues, no problems-nice and smooth; which is great for a brand new beta! It worked well, ran quickly and looked good-so far so good..

My big problem with it is it’s data use. It warns you that it constantly talks to it’s home servers and thus constantly uses your data allowance-which I think could be a problem. I’m really paranoid about getting stung with a £gazillion data bill so I don’t like things that use it up quickly! It could be the case, and I hope so, that BlueHoo isn’t really that bad..but I think I’m going to let other people discover that ;-)

I had Bluehoo on my Diamond when I went down to Microsoft Reading a couple of weeks ago, and although it picked up a whole host of Bluetooth devices, none of them had their BlueHoo profiles completed; I didn’t find another Hoo all day which was disappointing. To be honest, I think BlueHoo will stay under the radar used a lot by a few but never breaking out further than that. I’ve got to give them props for their viral marketing though, I was really excited leading up to PDC…just waiting to discover what a BlueHoo was..but now I feel slightly let down :-(

Microsoft PDC (Professional Developers Conference) 2008

This year’s PDC 2008 is going to bring with it a whole host of new things for the industry from Windows 7 advancements, cloud computing updates, new projects and more. I’m going to use this post as a central repository for the various different bits of information that we will see.

One of the new things that the PDC 2008 will reveal is “Project Velocity“, Microsoft’s main memory distributed caching framework which was “built to meet the performance, scale, latency, and availability requirements of large scale enterprise and web applications”.

“Oslo” is also present at the PDC 2008. There are 5 sessions around Oslo which is a family of new technologies to enable “data-driven development and execution of services and applications.” It “provides a language for creating schemas, queries, views, and values” and “uses schematized data stored in the “Oslo” repository to drive the development and execution of applications and services”.

A link that shows all the sessions is available here.

Microsoft Windows 7-Parallel Processing

Windows 7 is Microsoft’s next hotly anticipated release and there is now information that changes will be made to help it support Parallel Processing.

Microsoft have already stated that deep-level changes between Vista & Windows 7 will be get to a minimum as a way to ensure driver and application compatibiity; and if they pull it off,  Windows 7 will have a much better start to life than poor old Vista :-)

The downside to this is that they can’t play around with Win32 (Windows Core) too much, and that is going to limit what can be down with regards to Parallel Processing. However, at this year’s PDC (Professional Developers Conference), there is a session entitled “Parallel Symposium: Addressing the Hard Problems with Concurrency” and the session decription contains the phrase “Hear about the key architectural changes Microsoft is making to Windows to enable the efficient execution of parallel software.”, which shows the Redmond giant has clearly got something up it’s sleeve.

Many thanks to Mary Jo Foley over at ZDNet for this info. She’s also got some words from Craig Mundie, Microsoft’s Chief Research and Strategy Officer as to what’s on the drawing board.

Again, anyone attending the PDC please feel free to leave some comments if you hear anything blog worthy!

Microsoft Windows 7 Alpha @ PDC 2008

If the rumours are true, and it seems they are, then this year’s PDC (Professional Developers Conference) attendees are going to be coming away with an alpha copy of Windows 7!

I was over in Houston at the WPC (Worldwide Partner Conference) earlier this year and I got some cool stuff but nothing quite comparable to Windows 7…although one of the pens is pretty amazing (I might post up some pictures one day!).

I’m sure it will be covered with various NDA’s etc, but on the off chance it isn’t-if any of you are going to PDC 2008, I’d be most grateful if you could send me some screenshots and anything else you can.

I really hope that Windows 7 helps people get over the Anti-Vista thing that’s going on at the minute.
